Italian retailers first brought oriental rugs to Europe, where they were used as wall hangings and coverings. By 1600, France had developed a dominant weaver’s guild, and England wasn’t far behind. The 1700’s marked England’s emergence into the weaving business, and by about 1830, a superb portion of the wool produced in England was used for carpets.
Various machines had been created to help the method of weaving, and looms have grow to be so sophisticated right this moment that they run off of pc algorithms. Rugs were not extensively accessible within the US and Europe till the onset of mass manufacturing and the invention of business grade machines.
The first steam-powered loom appeared in 1787, and by 1876, the invention of the Axminster loom, a machine that permitted unlimited use of coloration and design, boosted the manufacturing of carpets. The advent of synthetic fibers and tufted carpet (carpet manufactured by the insertion of tufts of yarn by way of a carpet-backing fabric) made mass production and purchase of carpets easier, quicker, and fewer expensive. http://www.fastfloors.com/

Embroidery Machine Tips

Sewing for people with visual impairments?
While we’re on the subject of sewing machines…does anyone have some tips for using a sewing machine as a person with visual impairment? Of course I’d mark things with stick-on bumps (don’t know how I lived without those!), but I can’t see the stitching to know if it’s completely straight, and if it snags…well, then I’m in trouble.
I’d also love to get back into hand embroidery, which I love to do, but I don’t know how to do it now that I’m legally blind…my stitching ends up all over the place!
Tips? Ideas? Websites on the topic?
I never use stick-on bumps….instead I use the patterns that have the dashed line and then the dark black line…so when i take my material to the sewing machine I use painters tape (tape it to the machine) as to how close or far from the needle I want to sew. I use my fingers on the tape and on the edge of the material to judge if I’m sewing straight or not. By that I can usually sew pretty straight but even if it’s a tad wavy it’s ok especially on the stretch materials. The point is you don’t have to choose a material that you have to iron. It’s in the ironing that shows if you’ve done it wavy or not.
You mentioned snags. If you are using a snagable material (which I don’t suggest) then use a ballpoint (rounded) needle and the material won’t snag. I prefer using more stable material like cotton or heavier suit weight. And no snagging occurs. Also, I use a medium (not tight, not lose) stitch.
These days things are so inexpensive that come from China, Bangladesh, Mexico, etc. that it’s easier to purchase the top, slacks or outfit and then merely alter it (usually just hem it).
Also, for me I have to use a flashlight (with the big square battery) when I sew to see what I’m doing. I turn it on and off as needed. I would imagine for embroidering you might want a light that shines over your shoulder and directly onto your work.
